When the bladder remains filled with urine for long periods of time, it can provide an ideal setting for rapid bacterial growth.

CIC empties the bladder before bacteria can multiply suffiently to cause an infection. CIC also prevents wetting by patients with an overflow incontinece, a condition in which urine leaks from the full bladder and dribbles out.
